Maryland Dance Theater was established in 1971 by Dr. Dorothy Madden, the first Chair of the Department of Dance at the University of Maryland, and by Associate Director Larry Warren, Professor of Dance at the university. Dorothy Gifford Madden was born in New Hampshire in America and educated at Middlebury College, Vermont where she graduated in French and music and became interested in dance under the influence of Mary Lou Storrs who had been trained by the German expressionist Mary Wigman, a pupil of Rudolf Laban. Madden became a dance instructor in the physical education department at Maryland University and by 1967 had become the Founding Chairman of the Dance Department, a position she retained until 1972. ...

Louis Horst was born to Conrad and Leva Horst on the twelfth of January, 1884, in Kansas City, Missouri. Horst began to study piano at an early age. He became a professional accompanist, playing for silent films, stock theater companies, Broadway rehearsals, and later for many of the modern dance personalities of the thirties and forties.
